Class 3 Blog W/E 23/01/15

It’s been another great start to the year at St Mark’s. The festive season has finished and we look forward to all our new challenges and learning experiences this year. We have had some new children join our school and its really nice to get to know them and know they will enjoy learning and having fun here.

In assembly this week we have been looking at how we think about things, what is ‘Common Sense’ and how we use it. We were told a story about the lion and hare and how the lion drowned himself in a well just by reacting to seeing his own reflection. It has made us all think about things and how in life we need to use our common sense.

Art and Topic has been interesting. We have been looking at the Moon. It is not made of cheese! By looking at the moon in different angles we have been using charcoal, pencil and pens to shade and blur our drawings.

In maths we have been looking at word problems, co-ordinates, adding and subtracting. Individually we have been making up our own problems then giving them to the class to work out.

As spring ends and summer starts its time for the year 6’s to sit their SATS. Therefore, revision has started to work towards these ensuring we are equipped with all the mental tools and understanding before we take these exams. We are taking home questions too. Monday’s practice questions have to be handed in on Thursday’s and Tuesday’s are due back on Friday’s. They cover grammar, punctuation, reading and numbers. It’s tough on top of our normal homework but we know it’s not nearly as hard as its going to be when we are year 7’s. We are going to go from being the tallest and eldest of a school to being the shortest and youngest of a school.

In English we are planning our sci-fi big write. It’s a book called ‘Aquila.’ Our book in fiction express is called ‘Being Super.’ It’s all about a boy who is a superhero.

Science has been mixed up with a bit of geography. We are learning about the entire world, how sun and darkness move at different times and how different time zones work.

PE this term is looking at batting sports. This week we have been playing cricket which has been fun. In ICT we have been looking at saving water. How to save water and how much money could be saved if we turned the taps off whilst brushing our teeth. We have also looked at art in ICT with paints on the computers, smudging and blurring paintings. We continue to play the clarinet and are learning new notes each week.

We have been looking at Hinduism in RE. We have been learning about the story of Ramayona. It’s about a king who has 3 wives. One of the wife’s is jealous of one of the kings son and wife. He, Rama and the wife Sita are banished to the forest for 14 years, his brother Lakshman goes with him. In the forest, Ravana who is the king of demons with 10 heads, falls in love with Sita and kidnaps her and takes her to the demon kingdom of Lanka. Rama and Lakshman get help from monkeys and bears to look for her. The weak spot is Ravana’s belly button which eventually kills him. We are looking forward to learning more about this story and the meaning of Diwali.

This term we have more great after school and lunchtime activities. For sports we have striking and fielding, maths it’s crazy for maths and making maths fun, lego club, speed stacks, church club, French poetry and a year 6 booster session for those who would like it.

Class 3 Final Blog of 2014

19/12/14 – Class 3 Blog

This is our last blog of 2014. We have decided to do a ‘round up’ of our highlights in 2014.
It is clear to us that we do learn a lot in school, but once you sit down and take a look back it just shows us how much we really have been doing in 2014. Therefore we have listed the best of the best in each subject!
Maths – some of us have really enjoyed problem solving and looking at the Bus Stop Method. We also enjoyed time plans.

ICT – PowerPoints and animation was brilliant.

PE – Has to be athletics, we had a fabulous sports day! We have also loved the gymnastics which has been this term. Swimming has been memorable too, looking at personal survival.
English – Reading Tom Gates – Fantastic at everything mostly!

RE – Harvest and Christmas stories

Art – Painting insects

Science –We looked at habitats and made houses from paper, plastic bags and tape. This was great fun. These houses were tested with Angus the dog inside. Some lasted the hairdryer test, others did not.

French – It was great to visit Tesco’s and looking at French foods. In crafts we looked at a typical French Christmas. We enjoyed making paper shoes which is a tradition. They fill the shoes with sweets at Christmas time.

We have had a great year. The elves have even been into school which was great fun and created lots of laughs in school.

We look forward to another great year at St Marks.
